I am Olivia Gamber the founder of Occupational Olivia, I started this site to give people a more methodical, practical, and proven strategy to identifying their next career move and making it a reality. Most traditional career experts give you ambiguous advice—Follow your passion and you won’t work a day in your life! or You just have to network—but what does that even mean? How do you execute this advice to land your dream job and create a life you’ll love?
Most people cannot answer that question for you.
As an organizational psychologist and a lifetime student of career development, I’ve read and tested hundreds of the best books and articles on the topic. I’ve finally nailed down a process that works to identify your next job and land that job, without applying cold to a bunch of job boards.
I’ve come a long way since graduating with my bachelor’s degree. I started out working in a job I was way too skilled to be in. After getting my master’s in industrial/ organizational psychology, I started to understand the game that was being played around me and the unwritten rules to advancing your career.
Unfortunately, just being good at your job isn’t enough in today’s highly competitive environment; you also have to build relationships, be able to navigate complex corporate matrices, and develop many other key skills.
They never teach us these skills in college, and we cannot rely on university guidance counselors, professors, or our peers to help us navigate our careers in meaningful directions. The job market has evolved rapidly in the last decade, and most of us are failing to adapt our approach to advancing our careers. This causes us to miss many opportunities that exist and to fail to stay relevant to the demands of hiring managers.
Through Occupational Olivia, my company, I have been able to help hundreds of people identify jobs they love and land those jobs through my tested processes.
Many people come to me feeling stuck, unsure of what to do, and paralyzed by the choices in front of them. Unfortunately, most of them do not have a person in their life who loves their job and can model that to help them. The truth is, 75% of people are unhappy in their jobs, and there are few people who understand how to achieve finding work you are excited about and creating a life you love.
In my experience leading teams of recruiters, I understand that being able to thrive in an organization isn’t just about being a fit for a job, but also being a fit for the work group and the company culture. I’ve seen how this process works in Fortune 500 companies as well as small- to medium-sized companies.
Even though I’m relatively young I have found my way up the corporate ladder to be the head of Talent and Organizational Development at my current company. I get to see who gets to the upper echelons of Corporate, in the most desirable jobs through succession planning. I oversee learning and development at my company and I love learning about the latest approaches to learning, organizational development, and being able to apply this all to solve complex problems.
I used to think success was about meritocracy, getting degrees, and simply working harder than everyone else. That is a part of the equation, but we all realize that our work environments make it much more complex than that. I’m here to help you all understand how to get to where you want to be and provide a process to getting there. I didn’t simply get to where I am through education or luck, but through tested processes.
